Canadian Dairy Commission: Prices for industrial milk will remain the same in 2010

OTTAWA—Prices for industrial milk will remain the same in 2010, following a decision by the Canadian Dairy Commission not to reduce the cost.

The CDC’s cost for butter is to stay at $7.1024 per kg, a price used as a benchmark by provincial bodies tasked with setting selling costs of industrial milk, which is used in the production of cheese, ice cream, butter and yogurt.

In a statement, the head of the CDC, chairman Randy Williamson, said demand for dairy products in Canada remained stable in 2009, even with the state of the economy.

"Input prices have decreased slightly from their peak levels in 2008 which now allows dairy producers to cover their cost of production. As a result, the support prices for butter and skim milk powder have been left unchanged," Williamson said.

The CDC said demand for milk and milk products increased by three per cent in 2008-09, to 50.04 million hectoliters.

“Leaving the support prices unchanged will contribute towards maintaining or improving this trend,” said the CDC’s statement.

Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association president Garth Whyte disputes the status quo price, suggesting that the cost of industrial milk production dropped by almost two per cent in 2009.

“The decision by the CDC to keep dairy prices artificially high does nothing to reverse a long-term trend of falling demand for dairy products,” Whyte said, in a statement.

“The CDC is pricing dairy right off our menus. Year after year the CDC forces Canadians to swallow price increases when production costs go up, but they refuse to pass along the savings when production costs go down."

Whyte said Canadian industrial milk prices have jumped by 60 per cent overall during the last 15 years, making the cost here among the highest in the world, according to the CRFA.

Whyte wants the CDC to rollback the cost of industrial milk by 16.5 per cent to bring it back in line with the Consumer Price Index.

The CRFA addressed the CDC during hearings in Ottawa last week.

Restaurant Business Increase with Interior Design

According to specialist, restaurant interior design is as much a part of the dining experience as the food. People are more likely to patronize a restaurant that provides pleasing ambiance along with the good food, and Restaurants reservation service than a restaurant that is only known for its good cooking. In order to really succeed in the restaurant business, it is imperative that the restaurant interior design be as wonderful and appealing as the food that you serve.

Catering to the Younger Crowd

There are number of areas that you need to consider when planning your restaurant interior design. First, it will be important to assess the type of customers that you usually cater to, or expect to cater to. Note that you will then need to tailor your restaurant interior design to the needs and the taste of your particular type of customer.

For instance, if your customers are mainly the younger set, you will want to create a more vibrant and lively atmosphere in your restaurant. The shades of your walls should be light to give the area a youthful glow. You will also need to choose modern up-to-date furniture and fixtures to give the room that ultra modern look that suits the younger generation. The choice of music as well will need to be upbeat and well suited for young people.

Catering to the Professionals

On the other hand, if you are planning for an interior design for restaurant to attract and hold the high-end crowd, you will need to check your budget requirements. If your customers are mainly executives who desire some privacy while dining, you might want to set up booths conducive to private business discussions. The shades of your walls can be more muted and subdued. A rich mahogany color would be a great choice. Your decor must also be subdued. No loud colors will do, because this can be irritating for someone who just had a bad day in the office. Loud bold colors will look out of place in a high end restaurant.

Furniture and fixtures must be comfortable, functional and also pleasing to the eye. Make sure that your tables are the right size -- not too small and not too big. As for your chairs, opt for comfort. Look for chairs with wide seats and deep cushions. The more comfortable the chairs, the happier your clients will be. And they will stay longer. Keep in mind that you are catering to a group of successful executives and these people look for comfort and style. So serve it to them on a silver platter.

Cafe and Restaurant

A cafe and a restaurant may have minor differences, but the aesthetics of a cafe differ greatly from a restaurant. A common perception of a cafe is generally a cool hang out where people go and sip a cup of coffee, chill out, enjoy some snacks and spend more time. On the other hand, the restaurants are regarded as exclusive places for fine dining, and even if it is a small restaurant, people have higher expectations from it.

Now, when it comes to the variety of food items and menu of a cafe, folks do not expect a 4-5pages long menu. More so, a cafe is considered to be a rather informal hang out, so the customers do not expect high class leather menu covers either. Most of the folks like funky menu cards and unique looks, as opposed to the elegant and stylish looks of a restaurant menu card..

The clear menu cards are also a good choice for the cafe and pubs, whilst the standard leather menu cards and stylish fine dining these covers are considered appropriate for the restaurants.

You can try crazy designs, pictures of drinks, burgers, and anything that you want, on your cafe menu cards, but the customers at a restaurant expect nothing expect sheer class and dignity. Therefore, you should stick onto high standards and elegant designs rather than trying out anything outrageous and out of the lot.

It does not mean that a cafe is not meant for traditional dining, but it is not definitely a match for a dinner establishment like a restaurant, so you have the flexibility to add flair and uniqueness to your cafe menu. But, a three to four page menu looks nice only in leather menu covers. Additionally, classy wine menu covers and captain books are also very much essential for restaurants serving drinks. After all, nobody would like to order a costly Champaign from a menu, which has cheap menu cover.

Tip: If your restaurant serves daily specialties, then you may want to keep an added pocket on your menu cover for this purpose. You may also get menu cards with front window pockets to display your logo, or picture of the featured drink/delicacy.

Lastly, you may like to keep elegant table top menu holders and check presenters to match these covers. On the contrary, these covers may be designed along with promo offers inscribed on them.

Hence, keep these considerations into mind when you get a restaurant menu card designed. Remember, you do not need to spend a fortune on getting stylish covers designed, because even the inexpensive vinyl menu cards and clear menu cards can look great, if you select the right colors, fonts, and images, which go well with the theme of your business and interior decors of your premises.
